POWER POINT PARTY ∞

A New Audience

It is a period of great confusion. Some people in this living room have possibly never seen a single Star Wars film.

Armed only with slides, one brave presenter sets out to explain the Force: the mysterious power behind the Jedi, the Sith and a surprising number of ghosts….

A Power Point Party in three parts

Up to 138 ABY →Legends goes a century further
The zero pointStar Wars counts years from one event: the Battle of Yavin, when Luke destroys the Death Star in the very first film.
BBY and ABYBBY means Before the Battle of Yavin. ABY means After. It works just like BC and AD.
The films on the lineThe prequels sit at 32 to 19 BBY, the originals at 0 to 4 ABY, and the sequels at 34 and 35 ABY.
Quick checkLuke is born in 19 BBY, so he’s 19 years old when he blows up the Death Star.
Beyond the filmsGames, books and comics stretch the line to thousands of years BBY, and more than a century ABY.

Why two versions?Star Wars has two official histories, and fans argue about both.
1977–2014 · LegendsFor decades, books, comics and games kept adding stories. Together they were called the Expanded Universe.
2014 · The resetAfter Disney bought Lucasfilm, only the films and The Clone Wars were kept. Everything else became Legends.

Part II The powers

What is the Force?

An invisible energy made by every living thing. It connects everything in the galaxy.

How Obi-Wan explains it to Luke in the first film.

Force-sensitive Rare

A few people are born with a strong link to the Force. The next two slides show what makes them different.

Yoda, calm in the Dagobah swamp
Jedi

Light side

Calm, selfless and protective. Power through peace.

Palpatine’s yellow-eyed rage
Sith

Dark side

Fear, anger and ambition. Faster power, at a terrible price.

The basicsThe Force is the big idea behind Star Wars. Everything else builds on it.
Force-sensitiveMost people can’t feel it. A rare few are born with a strong link, and with training they can use it.
The light sideJedi use it calmly and selflessly, to protect others and to understand.
The dark sideSith use it through fear and anger. It’s faster and stronger, and it slowly ruins them.

Part II The powers

What are midi-chlorians?

A living cell full of tiny midi-chlorians, linked to the Force around it NUCLEUS MIDI-CHLORIANS THE FORCE
M-count · Anakin20,000+
Tiny life in every cell · The Phantom Menace, 1999

Microscopic living things inside the cells of every creature. Without them, life couldn’t exist.

The Force’s messengers · The Phantom Menace

They pass on the will of the Force. The more you have, the stronger your link. Quiet your mind and you can hear them.

Measured with a blood test · The M-count

Jedi counted them per cell in children’s blood. Qui-Gon tests young Anakin’s blood and gets the highest count ever recorded.

No father · The Phantom Menace, Revenge of the Sith

Anakin has no father. The films hint that a Sith made him with midi-chlorians, but they never say so.

Science gone wrong · The Mandalorian 2020, The Bad Batch 2024

Imperial scientists put Grogu’s high-count blood into a test subject. It worked for two weeks, then the body rejected it.

Lucas’s hidden plan · George Lucas, 2018

Lucas later said midi-chlorians talk to the Whills, tiny beings who are the Force itself. We’re just their vehicles.

Part II The powers

Who has how many?

Midi-chlorians per cellNumbers from the films, an official guidebook and an old Legends chart. Here’s who has how many.
Han Solo and Owen Lars · Legends chartAbout 1,500. Plenty of nerve, no Force.
An average person · Official guidebookAbout 2,500 per cell. Everyone has some.
Force-sensitive · Official guidebookSomewhere around 4,000 to 5,000 is where people start to feel the Force.
To become a Jedi · Legends chartThe Legends chart sets the minimum for a Jedi at 7,000.
A typical Jedi · Legends chartThe same chart puts the average Jedi at 10,000.
Yoda · The Phantom MenaceNo number at all. The film only says Yoda’s count is lower than Anakin’s.
Anakin Skywalker · The Phantom MenaceOver 20,000, the highest ever recorded. The Legends chart puts him at 27,700.
What a count can’t tell youMidi-chlorians show potential, not skill. A blood test can’t tell you who wins a lightsaber fight.

A subtopicIn Star Wars, death is usually final. Usually. Here are the ways around it.
Keep the self · JediJedi learn to let the body go and keep their mind in the Force. Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin return as ghosts.
Keep the self · SithSith won’t let go. When Palpatine’s body dies, his spirit jumps into a body waiting for him.
Same bodyLife for life. Ahsoka and Rey come back because someone else gives up their own life.
New bodyPalpatine dies in 1983 and returns in 2019 in a clone body. *Dr. Cylo’s backups may just be copies.
Corpse onlyNightsister witches raise the dead as soldiers. The body walks, but the person is gone.
The patternJedi let go. Sith hold on. Witches borrow the dead. And every return costs something.
